Chicago/Illinois Security Guard PERC Practice Exam

In the event of a fire alarm, a security guard's primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of all individuals in the area. The correct course of action is to evacuate the area calmly and assist others, which underscores the importance of prioritizing human safety over all other duties. The guard should be familiar with the building's evacuation routes and procedures, guiding people to safety while remaining calm to help prevent panic. Assisting others, particularly those who may need help—such as the elderly or disabled—demonstrates a commitment to the well-being of the community.

Continuing regular duties would be inappropriate during a fire alarm, as the alarm indicates a potential threat to life and requires immediate attention. Investigating the cause of the alarm could lead to unnecessary risk, especially if there is a genuine fire or hazard present. Additionally, attempting to turn off the alarm can delay evacuation and might even compromise safety, as the alarm's purpose is to alert everyone to leave the premises promptly.
